BY HENDRIK MUSEKAMP
Hi all! It’s Friday. Hence, here is your weekly dose of hmx-weekly, a list of what I’m enjoying, pondering, or working on. Enjoy.
POWER OF ENVIRONMENT
We tend to believe our habits are a product of our motivation, talent, and effort. Certainly, these qualities matter. But the surprising thing is, especially over a long time period, your personal characteristics tend to get overpowered by your environment.
The author ends with giving advice on how to design a better environment. I like the idea of subtracting negative influences, such as removing unhealthy foods. What I have to remove repeatedly are distractions on my workplace.
This is the psychology podcast by Dr. Kaufmann on how to Boost Your Focus, Drive, and Micro-Resilience with Bonnie St. John. If Resilience Is About How You Recharge, Not How You Endure here is advice on how to do this on a micro level.
Moreover the two elaborate on the importance of dieting, exercise or meditation, when most needed – on those stressful days with important appointments.
WHAT I’M READING
If you focus on near-term growth above everything else […] you miss the most important question you should be asking: Will this business still be around a decade from now?
The quote is attributed to Peter Thiel, founder of Paypal and author of Zero to One, questioning “hype- or viral-thinking”. Your business has got to be either extremely practical or extremely entertaining or chances for long term success will fade. Check it out, I love Ryan Holiday’s style of writing.
ARTICLE I ENJOYED
“Instead of the easy numbers” by Seth Godin: “System innovations almost always involve rejecting the standard metrics as a first step in making a difference. When you measure the same metrics, you’re likely to create the same outcomes. But if you can see past the metrics to the results, it’s possible to change the status quo.”
